The Road to Become a Doctor

Being a doctor is one of the noblest professions in this world. Being able to save a life gives the greatest mental satisfaction and happiness during one’s existence. To become a doctor, one needs to be dedicated and determined. The life of a physician is dedicated to the ones in need. A doctor should always be ready and available to help the people in need. The father of medicine Hippocrates said:
“The physician must be able to tell the antecedents, know the present, and foretell the future — must mediate these things, and have two special objects in view with regard to disease, namely, to do good or to do no harm.”
― Hippocrates
The road to becoming a doctor is long and difficult. Being a doctor is one thing but being a good doctor is another thing. The latter one is of course filled with thorns and the less traveled one. But the grass is truly greener at the end of the travel. The ones who take the path of hard work emerge successful!
The preparations to becoming a doctor begin from early school years. A building can be strong only if the base is strong enough. A strong and clear basic education at the primary, secondary as well as higher secondary level is the foundation on which medical science has to build up on. In this blog, I will elaborate about the various stepping stones to becoming a doctor.
10th grade marks !!!
10th grade!!
Relatives: “This is the turning point in your life. If you don’t score good your life is a waste!”;
Parents: Switch off the TV! Go and study! Board exams coming up”
Teachers: Be very careful and score marks. Study for 6 hours in a day. Work hard! Board exams coming up”
Friends: “Dude!! Board exams!!! Planning to study? We must pass man!!
Pre boards, boards, books, study… life may seem like a mess!
“What is the use of studying so much? Trigonometry and periodic table won’t help me in life!!”
I am sure that most of you can relate to these dialogs. I too was one among  you. But later you realize that cell structures and human body diagrams does serve lot more purpose in life than you could ever even imagine. They are the ones who decide what your future is going to be like. If you are able to understand them well and score good marks, your dreams of hanging a stethoscope and doing the rounds in a white coat will become true. If not, you may end up an attendant to the one in white!! Now it’s all up to you!!
So, your step 1 is to score well in 10th boards and secure admission to science (medical) section of 11th grade. Once it’s done you have taken the first baby step towards your doctor seat.
12th grade
Okay! Here we go! 10th grade drama – part2. A lot more dramatic this time!! Well I must agree that this is rather a very important drama! This is where you become 1/4th a doctor. This is where you must get all the concepts correct. Understanding the concepts in NCERT is very important. The two years in 11th and 12th grade is the right time when you can get all your concepts clear.
Coaching classes
I would recommend a part time two year coaching program during both 11th and 12th grade for medicine so that you get a clear idea about the entrance exam and also how to prepare for it.
TIP: Never take the risk of a one year coaching covering the syllabus of both first and second year during 12th grade as this will do more harm than good. You will not be able to concentrate on neither medical entrance preparation nor the board exams and you will end up ruining both.
Practice makes a man perfect
If you think attending classes and doing assignments will make you perfect, you are wrong! The idea is you must keep constant touch with the books and keep practicing as many questions you can so that you can answer all the questions within the given time without much error. This will give you an edge over other candidates to get selected for the medical seat.
Medical entrance examinations
Various medical entrances are conducted for admission to various colleges in India and abroad where lakhs of students study medical science and come out with flying colors.
Income and salary
The income of a doctor varies from place to place and the institution they are working in. government is providing a good pay scale for resident doctors in various government hospitals and clinics. . My own brother is a doctor placed in a remote village by the Govt. of Kerala and is earning well enough for a good life for him and our family. The growth rate in this sector is also good. Apart from government, private sector is also hiring doctors in hospitals where the payment provided is very high as compared to the government sector. You can also open certified private clinics on your own to provide treatment and earn according to your convenience.

11 things to take care while preparing for Medical Entrance Exams?

Imagine yourself walking down the corridor in a white coat on top of your formals, with a stethoscope hanging halfway from the coat pocket, a pen and diary in your hand. This is exactly how a medical aspirant pictures him/herself 5 or 6 years down the line. If you think one year of coaching, two years of mugging up and three hours in the examination hall is all what it takes to make the imagination a reality, you are terribly wrong. To achieve being a doctor requites smart work. In this article I will give you a gist of how to go about the entire procedure starting from the scrape to being a doctor and prepare for medical entrance examinations.

Keep a diary of the list of medical entrances

First of all it is very important to know about all the medical entrances in India and abroad. Different places and examinations have different eligibility criteria and different pattern. After making the list choose which all entrance examinations you are eligible to and which you plan to attend and make a priority list according to your choice. Also write down the syllabus and the topics particularly important for that examination according to weight-age corresponding to the examination name

TIMETABLE!!!!

“Exam tomorrow…open books today….mug up ….score marks…. “ . This formula, unfortunately will not work when it comes to medical entrances. Medical preparation needs lots of commitment, passion, organized and smart work. First step for this would be to make a timetable. All students are different with different style of learning and also may prefer to study at different times of the day. Set a time table for study which suits your convenience. Always remember that the number of hours does not matter but the quality of study matters.

Regular studies

Studying for a stipulated time every day covering a bit extra of each topic every day is a key formula to achieve success in the examination. You must have seen how an ant collects food
bit by bit to store it for use when times go wrong. Similarly learning bit by bit everyday will remain for a long time. It is much healthier and correct way of studying rather than studying everything in a single day.

NCERT- The forgotten key!

Juggling with coaching materials, Pradeep S and H.C.Verma, students usually tend to forget about the real key to cracking medical entrances. It’s nothing but our good old NCERT text books. If you take a close look at all the major medical entrances in India, most of the questions are based on NCERT text books. After all these entrances are held to check the basic understanding of the concepts of students for which nothing can be better that NCERT. This does not mean that other books are to be ignored. They will help you give an idea about different difficulty levels.

The villain- negative marks!

Negative marking is definitely a villain. Depending on the examination marks are deducted from the scored marks for each wrong question. So, you should be very careful while answering questions. If you are doubtful about a question’s answer it is better not to attempt that question that to attempt it and get it wrong. Zero marks are definitely better than negative marks!!!

Time is score!

Time management is very important. You must be able to answer most number of questions correctly in least possible time. The one who is able to do this emerges to the top ranks. Also the time for filling the bubbles in case of OMR examination should also be managed. It is always better to do one particular section and then immediately mark all the bubbles in that particular section before going on to the next. This will save time and avoid confusion as most students tend to mark the wrong bubbles and earn negative marks when all question’s bubbles are marked together. Practice is the key to time management. Try to practice as many questions as possible in least time.

Previous years papers

Practicing previous years question papers will give you an idea about the pattern of the questions and need of each medical entrance exams. Going through these papers for each entrance will give an idea about which all topics you must focus on for each examination and prepare accordingly. Also practicing the papers by keeping a clock will help you know your speed. Daily practice will improve your speed of solving questions and also time management skills

Key notes

Keeping a note of key topics and concepts are important. You can keep a notebook and write down all the key concepts, formulas and topics in it. This will help in quick reference before the examination.

Doubt diary

Keep a small notepad to write down the doubts you come up on while studying certain topics. Those doubts can be cleared by consulting a teacher or through internet after the study session so that the session is not disturbed. Also it will help you remember your doubts so that you can clear it later.

Medical courses

There are various undergraduate courses for medical studies. In the table below I will give a list of various undergraduate courses in medicine and the corresponding colleges offering the course and also the number of seats

Relax!!

Studying with a free mind is very important. Keeping on filling a pot without a stop will be a waste. It is important to take regular breaks. Do some extracurricular activities that you enjoy like dance, music, sports etc. lead a healthy life. It is very important to do regular exercise and be healthy because without health you will not be able to study properly. All your efforts will be a waste without health.
The life of a doctor is an eternal commitment. You should always be ready to take up any cases. You must be ready to face the hectic 24*7 schedule without a complain. Go for it only if you think you are choosing this career and not settling for it. Settling will never make you a good doctor and a happy person. Only choosing will. Follow your passion of being a doctor and achieve it with full confidence and dedication.
There are four steps to accomplishment
-plan purposefully,
-prepare prayerfully,
-proceed positively,
-pursue persistently.

Why Should You Become a Doctor?

“Fever? Body pain? Go to a doctor!!”; “Tooth ache? Go to a dentist!!”; “fracture? Consult an orthopedic!!!” These are some of the daily life scenes in our day-to-day lives. Some time or the other, all of you must have got down with some mild to serious health issues and must have consulted general physicians or specialist doctors. What more! You were born in front of a doctor!! All of you must have sat in the chair opposite to a doctor- as a patient! But have you ever considered how it is to be on the other side? How it is to be a doctor yourself? If you haven’t yet, you must! Better late than never!
As children, our idols were the superheroes like superman, batman etc. The quality which amazed us all and wanted to incorporate into us is the ability to save lives. But unfortunately being a superman literally, to fly and jump from building to building and save people is only possible in movies. But being a doctor is nothing less than being a superhero. You get to save many lives! Of course without having to fly and injure yourself!
  • Are you willing to learn?
  • Are you willing to let go your sleep?
  • Are you willing to let go your time to rest?
  • Are you willing to stop being lazy?
  • Do you want to save lives?
  • Do you want to bring a new life with tiny hands and feet into this world?
  • Do you want to make the tiny life breathe and the little eyes open to see the world?
  • Do you want the thankful eyes of an elderly?
  • Do you want the respect filled glances of children admiring you in the white coat?
  • Do you want to be a human?
All you have to do is to become a doctor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Medicine – A peek into history

Medicine is one of the noblest professions in this world. Since the time we are born till the time we die, doctors are in need. Most of us are born into the arms of a doctor. As we grow we have many requirements. We all are prone to injuries and diseases. Sometimes we face life threatening conditions. A doctor is whom we rush to whenever we or our dear ones face such troubles. Medical science is as old as the world. Humans initially found out the power of plants, leaves and other naturally available materials to cure various diseases and improve health conditions. Some people chose to study more on these medicines and became the first ever physicians. Our country, India is the land of the most ancient medical science – Ayurveda. Medical science took a new turn in our land when Charaka and Shushruta , fathers of surgical medicine were born.
Having such a rich past in the field of medicine, it is important to understand and study medicine.
Respectful profession

Being a doctor, you will be seen with lots of respect from all the people around you. Children, elderly, and your own family members will respect you for being the life saviour. You will indeed have the superhero image that you dreamed of having in childhood. The tears of joy in your eyes when the mother of a kid whom you just saved from slipping away from her arms forever looks at you with a thankful glance is worth more than the joy of any success and money the world has to offer.
Treat your dear ones!!!!

Apart from this have you ever thought about the benefits of your own near and dear ones if you become a doctor? When one of your family members meet with an accident or come down with an illness you must have for sure thought for a moment that if you had a doctor residing in your home it would have been nice. True isn’t? It will save you from the panic of rushing them to a hospital for a simple first aid which could save their life. In that case why don’t you become that doctor residing in your own house who is always available to save your family? The mental satisfaction that you feel after treating someone from an illness will truly be magical.
Get ready to get rich!!

Now if you think charity is the only reason for being a doctor and that you would die poor for charity, you are terribly wrong. The government is offering a good pay scale for resident doctors in different hospitals and clinics. My own brother is a doctor placed in a remote village by the Govt. of Kerala and is earning well enough for a good life for him and our family. The growth rate in this sector is also good. Apart from government, private sector is also hiring doctors in hospitals where the payment provided is very high as compared to the government sector.
Being an entrepreneur

You can also open certified private clinics on your own to provide treatment and earn according to your convenience.
As a research scientist

Treating people and providing medicines is not the only profession for a doctor. If you are a dedicated doctor with true interest in medicine, you can become a researcher in the field of medicine. Research and development of new medicines and vaccines is on great demand especially with the rise of new diseases such as the Zika virus recently.
Universal job!

One awesome thing about medicine is that it is the same wherever you go. In any part of the world that you go, medical science remains the same which obviously means you have a job wherever you go
Earn till the end!!

However the world advances, whatever age you are – 20 or 90, a doctor will always have patients to look after. Yes!! It is an evergreen profession to be a doctor. You will be able to work and earn and be financially independent till the day you die.
“We are physicians. It is a proud title. It carries prerogatives; it carries privileges. Most of all it carries accountability, not only for the future of a great profession but for the very lives of our fellow sufferers from the human condition”.
-Lindsey.E.Bealton

Studying Medicine Abroad : MBBS in Other Countries

If you are planning to study medicine, you must have already done your homework about the course you must study and the entrances you must give to get in any medical college in India. Many of your friends and relatives must have told you about studying medicine abroad. Are you confused? Whether you should study in India or abroad? If abroad, where all can you apply? How will you meet the financial requirements?! Well! Let me help you out with all that.

Step 1: Choosing the location of study

When it comes to studying abroad, it should be clear as to which country and college you are planning to study in. There are many colleges in nearby and faraway countries which offer medical degree. This includes US, UK, Germany, China, Russia, Australia, Georgia, Ukraine, Japan, Nepal and many more. But many factors should be carefully studied and considered before zeroing in on one country.

Step 2: Do your research

Do your research about the medical education in different countries, the quality of colleges offering the course and also the law and order and rules and regulations of the country as well as the university. Also consider the finances of the course and economic state of the country. After considering all these factors, make a list of the countries which are feasible for you to study in.

Step 3: Finances

Collect all information in detail about the course fees for studying MBBS in that particular country you plan to go. It is a trend among people to blindly choose to go to first world countries which are popular brand names like US, UK, Australia etc. for medical studies. These countries are in general very expensive and by the end of your undergraduate medical studies you might end up in a financial breakdown and you will be left with no money for future studies like MD and DM. Always remember that these days, MBBS doctors are of no value. Patients usually do a background check on the doctor’s qualifications before consulting one and prefer highly qualified doctor over one with only an MBBS degree. So consider your finances and always consider saving money for future. There are many good colleges offering first quality MBBS degree in countries like Russia, China etc. The number of medical aspirants migrating to these countries for education has shown an exponential increased in recent times.

Step 4: Catch hold of that senior!!!!

You may be totally pissed off at that school senior for insulting you in the name of ragging! But you find out one fine day that he is a student of the college you plan to study in! Don’t you hesitate! Go and get talking! Surveying is very important when it comes to studying abroad. Talk to people who have been or are associated with the university or the country where you want to go. Try to get as much negative and positive information as possible.

Step 5:Get a valid passport and VISA

A valid passport and VISA is necessary for you to travel abroad and study. All the formalities regarding this should be completed well before the application to colleges are forwarded. Some countries like Nepal also offer high quality medical degree and traveling to Nepal does not require a passport or VISA!
You can apply for passport online using: http://passportindia.gov.in/AppOnlineProject/welcomeLink

Step 6: Take those examinations

If you are planning to study abroad you may have to take particular examinations like TOEFL, IELTS, GRE etc. which tests your aptitude and language abilities. A good score in these examinations are mandatory to secure your admission in colleges abroad. If you are planning to study in European countries, Canada etc. the only exam you are required to take is TOEFL while for studying in countries like Germany, GRE is a must. The score in these examinations will decide whether you go to a top college or not.
